True Southern Girl?

Whew...this day has gone by fast!

I guess today has seemed shorter because I didn't come in until 10:30 at work, due to me taking Boomer to his vet appointment today. He's fine, he just had a little bump on his belly that we were concerned about and wanted to get checked out. The vet told me it was nothing to worry about, just kind of a leftover of his navel cord. I wasn't aware dogs had those, but whatever. I got him some medicine too, since he was running out of his heartworm and flea meds. Overall he was a good boy. He growled a bit at the vet when she tried to touch him and when she stuck the thermometer in somewhere he didn't want it, but I kind of expected that.

You know, I was noticing today how many people that are military spouse bloggers have such wonderful recipes on their websites. I mentioned this to Army Doctor's Wife after reading her delish recipe for the cream cheese brick. Seriously ladies I see how many of you are great cooks, we should seriously put together a cookbook! Think about that and get back to me.

I've decided in the last few years that I must not be a true southern gal. Yes, I consider Oklahoma to be a Southern state. Anyway, why you ask am I not a true southern gal? Well, most of it has to do with food. I don't like gravy. Never have. Even as a baby I hated it. True southerns love gravy. On mashed potatoes, on biscuits, on chicken fried steak. Blech. I also don't like iced tea. Actually the only tea I drink is Tazo iced chai tea from Starbucks. Tea tastes like dirty water to me. Another southern staple for a picnic or get-togethers is watermelon. Again...I hate watermelon. I actually don't like any kind of melon. The flavor just isn't there for me. There are some southern favorites I really love. Fried chicken (white meat only) fried okra, ok basically anything fried (even pickles) chicken fried steak...are we noticing a trend here? Amazingly though I love all the traditional Louisiana favorites. Maybe I'm a true Cajun at heart? Nothing like some etouffee or some jambalaya. Both are delish in my book!

Today I saw something that really bothers me. Women who are pregnant that smoke. I mean, that really bothers me and honestly it's really hard for me not to say anything. There are times when Sean and I go out to the bar and there are pregnant women there just inhaling all the smoke. I'm not trying to judge anyone who has done that, but I could never do that. I don't even want people who smoke around me when I'm pregnant. Several of Sean's friends wives smoked during most if not all of their pregnancy. I just can't understand why women continue to do it. If you still want to smoke can you not put it off for 9 months?

Anyway, Sean and I are craving some chicken friend steak tonight so instead of me laboring over a hot stove, I think we're going to go to the local steakhouse and enjoy some fatty food. Do you know how long it's been since I've had a good chicken fried steak? Too long my friends, too long.

I'm a true Southern girl and I HATE gravy. I love sweet tea, not just iced tea because unsweet tea does taste like dirty water. I'm very picky about my tea.

I agree about women smoking while pregnant. That is why my cousin is special needs. She will never have a normal independent life and it was because her sorry mother couldn't quit chain smoking while she was pregnant. Fortunately she got the picture and did quit while pregnant with her other two kids.

Stealing the idea from the Junior League, I've also thought spouse groups should put together a cookbook that would benefit military dependents (in the way of scholarships or outreach projects). I would love to start something like this and get it rolling...

If you get the country fried steak, make sure they don't put any gravy on it :)

I'm also a true Southern girl!! I love gravy--even good on french fries!!, but I have never been able to develop a love a tea. I've tried several times in my lifetime to "like" it--but blech!!

And--being a NICU nurse--I can tell you, it is sad when we get babies in to mom's that were heavy smokers. The babies are very irritable, needing their nicotine fix. After a few days, they are fine, but very fussy for the 1st few days.

PSA--if you are pregnant---DON'T SMOKE PLEASE!!

PSA to whoever reads this comment!! Not to you personally new girl!! Just wanted to clarify.

I'm a southern girl by birth and don't care for gravy either- even on my chicken fried steak. (although I do love it mixed with sausage on toast, also known as shit-on-a-shingle. Yum)

Sweet tea, if done the proper Texan way, does not taste like dirty water. You just haven't had it done right yet!

Also, I too am completely shocked when a see a pregnant woman smoking. I thought that women stopped doing that around the same time they stopped wearing feathered bangs. It makes me so sick. When my friend was going into labor, there was a fellow Marine spouse beside us that was telling the doctor that she smoked a pack and a half a day!!! And she wondered whey she was going into premature labor.

Brings up the question of whether or not people should have to be screened before having children. :)

A pregnant woman smoking??? Seriously?? I understand how hard it is to quit, but you are pregnant! The other one that gets me is people smoking in the car with their kids!

I totally love the cookbook idea! I've seen the Tastebook website where you can create your own cookbooks and it just looks so neat.

And yeah...gravy and tea are about the grossest things out there. And I can't do grits either, the texture freaks me out.

Girl I love me some gravy and tea. I love getting a chicken strip basket with the white gravy. Watermelon come on that is so good. I agree with the smoking, I'm trying to get my husband to quit, but he does not smoke around us. Much Love from Queen Bee

mmm love me some gravy. I'm a true southerner despite being from MD but its the furthest point south in md. My fathers from GA and I swear coca cola runs thru my veins!

I just saw a woman the other day leaving the hospital (clinic) with her itty bitty baby who must have been just a month or two old and I swear to you she pulled out a cig the second she walked thru the doors.

Oh and by the way military spouse cookbooks rock. I have one from almost every base my aunt and uncle were stationed at and the best was the War College one. Let me tell you, those wives could cook!

I have a gigantic collection of cookbooks. Seriously, *R* told me I have to stop buying them because they are going to be such a pain to move come PCS time.

So I told him, "when I stop buying cookbooks, you stop eating". The next day he was all, "Do you want a cookbook from here honey?".

House Rule #5: I have a Febreeze bottle on my backporch so anyone who smokes has to spray themselves down before they come back in our house.

Oh what about a mil-spouse cooking blog? You can have everyone contribute, and then once we get a big collection going we could print them as a book!

Ouch...it hurt writing "mil-spouse" on that one...oh well, maybe I can join up next year?

Lindsay Gray said...

You can set the blog up to have multiple contributors so they can, edit the recipes, try them out, or make sure not to double up on the same recipe, etc.

In lieu of my non-spouse status, I would be happy to volunteer my services for such a role. :-) Especially quality control!

Oh and don't worry about the recipes, I already have 5 or 6 in my head I want to do!

Dispite all the "southern" foods you dont like, the ones you do pretty much qualify you!

I love your cookbook idea! My FRG is putting together one as we speak and my MIL makes one every year to give as gifts for the holidays. If you decide to pursue this, let me know what I can do to contribute! Id love to help!
