Girls Night Out

Last night I attended a sort of girls night out function with a friend of mine and some of her friends. I'm not going to lie and say I was really excited about it, because initally I wasn't, but once I went I was glad I did.

We started out at my friend's house and then drove to a local winery. It was awesome! You grab a little cup at the entrance and just go around to all of these huge containers that are labeled with what kind of wine they are. We had a good time just sampleing wine and pitching an idea for a new TV show "The Real Housewives of XX, Italy". In all honesty I think it'd be a real hit. Half Army Wives (with accurate information) and Half Real Housewives. What amazed me though was that none of them had kids and they were all pretty close in age to me. Unheard of usually in the Army. Not knocking people with kids at all, please understand that, but in today's military I find it hard to find women my age who don't have children.

I didn't leave the winery empty-handed though. I now have one bottle of Moscato in my posession and two bottles of fragolino (strawberry wine).

Two of the girls went home to Skype with their husbands and three of us went back to my friend's house for some pasta and more conversation. I liked the other girl that went back with us, but she was a huge complainer. Her main beef was that my friend and I get to talk to our husbands almost daily. I really didn't know what to tell her, I didn't think I should apologize, because sometimes that's just the luck of the draw. I could tell it really bothered her though because she brought it up constantly throughout the night. I liked her, but I can't see myself being friends with her. You can tell she's a very nervous individual who's afraid of being in a foreign country and to be honest I have NO idea how she's going to survive this deployment.

(Penis shaped pasta from Venice..no idea...this was the only pasta in the house)

Overall it was a great night though and I can't wait to do it again.

The pasta cracks me up..lol. I admit it is hard to be close to people when they want to compare like that. It seems we have been through parts of deployment with a lot of conversation and then other parts with rare conversation. Like you said it is the luck of the draw.

Your wine sounds so good!

It's a shame about the one girl. While deployments are hard on everyone, complaining will not make them shorter or easier. I don't blame you for wanting to distance yourself from her, the last thing I would want during a deployment is a friend who was constantly complaining. Maybe with some time, she'll change her outlook?

Amen on the kid thing.

I can't stand wine but always thought the winery tasting would be fun. I really can't stand when people play the compare game. Life is not fair no matter were you are in life you just have to make the best of it. She will learn though, because if she doesn't find the small things to be grateful for then she's gonna miss the good things sadly.

Man your girls night at the winery sounded fun. I love strawberry wine! I'm glad you met other wives who are living it up without kids too. I have the opposite problem, I can't find military wives my age WITH kids.

Glad you had a great night.

That's awesome that you had a night out like that! Strawberry wine is so delicious!

I'm still working on the adjustment and hopefully not complaining too much. I know how lucky I am to be even getting a few emails a week, and how lucky I was to talk to him almost daily for the time he was in Kuwait.

I'm glad that you're getting to know some other wives who are your age without kids! It makes it so much better to have someone who understands!

The pasta was random hilarious, I was looking at the picture and thinking...."is that what I think it is?"

I'm glad you are still able to have such great communication with your husband, no accounting for how people handle the situations they are in. For her sake I hope she's able to adjust into a different frame of mind, or maybe you just caught her on a bad day.

It's strange, I caught myself feeling a bit of the opposite. I was feeling a bit guilty for getting to have such great communication with my "friend" when I know that some women don't even have that with their husbands, but I figure it is more for him than anything so I need not feel that guilt.

Did you not want to go out because of the girls or just not in the mood? When Mark was gone, all I wanted to do was blanket myself in my familiar surroundings and things, so much so that dinner with friends didn't even sound fun most of the time. Forget the tooth pulling it would take for me to travel out of my comfort zone for a few days. I don't know, maybe that was just me.

The only pasta in the house, huh? hahaha!

I totally feel ya on the no kids thing. Though to be honest I'm lucky if we even find another couple our age- kids or no kids. Being the only couple in a group of single 20-22ish guys really sucks sometimes.

Yay for making friends! I agree, it's VERY hard to find military spouses who don't have kids around my age, and even harder to find ones who actually are serious about their lives/have gone to/are going to college.

"but in today's military I find it hard to find women my age who don't have children"

it is so damn true! LOL Ladies with kids please understand us, you would feel the same if you were the only one with kids among all no-kids girls.

Btw - what's situation with your mold, my good news is that our landlords have painted walls and treated it with something so there's no more mold in the house.

So glad you got out and about. And I have a question - does the penis pasta taste funny?? No seriously, thats a real question.

I tried it once at a bachelorette party and it tasted really weird, like, too gummy or something. Just curious if that was only my experience....

Army wife friends were SO IMPORTANT for getting me through our deployment. I hope these new friends can be your crutches like mine were for me.

We are also child-less and you're absolutely right about that being unheard of in the Army these days! It baffles my mind actually how different the average age for starting to have children is so different in the Army vs. in the civilian world. Oh well...go us for being unusual!! :)

I love moscato wine but sadly can only find a couple of brands of it that aren't outrageously expensive around here. :(
