Government Resume Help

Here's the situation, looking on USAjobs today I ran across a few jobs here at Ft. Sill that I'm interested in.  The bad news is the date that they close is in two days.  Even worse news is that my resume hasn't been updated in awhile and I know that government resumes are different in that keywords in the resume is what helps your resume get sorted from the rest.

I don't have time to sign up and take the government resume writing class before these jobs close, so I'm coming to you, my readers. If you've written a government resume, taken the ACS class about it or know a helpful website about it, please let me know!

I need all the help I can get!

I have never taken a government resume course. But I have had a gov. job and each resume is run through a computer to see if you are compatible for the job. The computer is looking for key words and those words are usually the same ones found in the job description. Take the job description and try to use the same wording when applicable. I have also had to hire DOA Civilians and if you are a veteran you go to the head of the line, then spouses, and then other people. I am pretty sure you will have to fill out that information when you submit your resume online. And if I remember correctly, you don't have to worry a lot about formatting because it is more of a fill in the blocks website. It has been a few years so things may have changed. I hope you get some more information from people who have recently applied. Good luck!

We're getting ready to leave Ft. Sill! I agree with Nikki T., she has good points about matching keywords. Also with DoD jobs, it is also very much "who you know." Don't be afraid to network with people in the department you're looking to apply...it couldn't hurt. Good luck!

Keywords, keywords, keywords. If you've done something that is listed on the duties description of the announcement, copy and paste it in your resume. I was a DoA employee, and now a DoD. Getting on that stupid list is hal fth ebattle. Good luck!

I have to second the key words recommendation. You almost have to copy the job posting word for word and explain how it relates to your experience. Also, add more detail than you ever thought was necessary. My federal resume is over 7 pages long. Good luck!

I took the resume course and worked with the people at Employment Readiness to get mine to standards. It has a lot to do with keywords and you want to make your resume as inclusive and broad as possible, that why it is more likely your skills will match with those jobs. You are also eligible for priority placement, so I would see if you could get in to see them ASAP. Our Civilian Personnel office is walk in.
