About what to do with my job that is. The pure and simple truth is that I hate my job. It just hasn't been the same environment since my boss that I started working under left.
Under my new boss there is a total lack of organization. We've gone days at a time without stocking the cooler for sodas because she won't go to the commissary and buy the sodas. We don't have snacks, eating utensils, paper towels or even cups for that matter. I've even provided her with a shopping list of what we need. Take for example, today she went to the commissary. What did she come back with? Lunch for herself and for a volunteer. Nothing else that we need. It's been this way pretty much since she's been here.
It's also getting to the point that I'm expected to do all the "bitch work". Neither she nor the assistant manager make an effort to clean in the evenings or during the day for that matter. I come in for the evening shift and the kitchen will be a mess, dishes in the sink, liquid spilled on the floor, etc. Also in the capacity, I've been working shifts that noone else wants to work. I had plans for a party on Halloween and I'm informed today, two days ahead of time that I'm working the Halloween party at the USO. Obviously her promise of me being off weekends is void.
I talked to Sean about it today. He told me to just quit. I want to, it's gotten to the point where I just hate being there. I love the volunteers and helping out soldiers, but I can't stand to be in this job with these people managing it anymore.
Here's my question for you guys though. I'm thinking of not giving two weeks notice. I've always done that, but in this case I honestly don't want to. Do you think that's terribly unprofessional of me? Honestly?
I am a firm believer in never burning any bridges, so I would want to give some sort of notice. You never know if and when you may run into these people again or work under any of them. It is a small world and I would hate for you to be turned down from a positon in the future because of the decision you made today. Hope this helps!!
ReplyDeleteA two week notice is best, if you feel like you can but I understand where you are coming from. Maybe when you give your notice they will give you the option of working the next two weeks or just leaving? It is hard to work someplace you despise but two weeks is not that long and after that you are done! HTH!
ReplyDeleteThe only thing is it is a very small post, and if you apply for a job somewhere else that might come back to bite you.
ReplyDeleteHave you thought about the schools? I loved working at the elementary school, and you always have weekends off.
Personally, I left my temp job to take my current job with about four hours notice because I hated it that fricken much. But since you've been there for so long, I'd say to give your two weeks notice as sucky as it is.
ReplyDeletePersonally, I would give notice because any bad experiences at any job can come back to haunt you later. I know this advice sucks. Sorry you're so miserable at the current job. I'm sure another door will open for you soon. Best of luck to you!
ReplyDeleteI have to agree with everyone. Give the notice. I know that sucks. Once I make up my mind on anything, I want it done right at that moment, but it's the dreaded right thing to do. With any luck, they'll just kick you out then!
ReplyDeleteI echo the sentiments, give the notice.
ReplyDeleteI'm usually the one in the crappy job situation, oh wait, like now, unemployed! (Although unemployment has its perks)
I agree about giving the notice. Once they have their notice, they may just tell you that they don't need you anymore. Either way, at least you have done the right thing.
ReplyDeleteGive her two week notice but also remind her that it is because of the no working weekends policy that she seems to have forgotten about. Also let her know that you cannot work Saturday as you have had long time standing plans and that since you didn't have to work weekends before you shouldn't have to give up your weekends now. I think that would make them wary the next time they promised something to someone.
ReplyDeleteNormally I would say give notice because that is what I have always striven to do because in the end, you don't burn bridges and you look better. HOWEVER, over the summer I worked briefly for Aeropostale. I HATED the job with all my heart and soul. I tried to make it work because my mom and husband told me just to try and stick it out. I couldn't. So I gave my notice. In the end though, I hated working there so much that I couldn't even stand to endure two more weeks and had to tell them I just couldn't finish it out. Do I regret it? No. I feel bad about what I did because I didn't have any problem with the people, just the actual job, but in the end I was SO much happier that it didn't matter.
ReplyDeleteWhile opinions are good, really think about what YOU want. Are you sure you can endure the next two weeks with the bullshit? Or are you at your limit? Because if you are, don't make the mistake I did and make a promise you can't keep.
Good luck! Glad you are finally finding peace with the situation.
I agree with giving the two weeks notice, but, sometimes don't like it because they wouldn't give you two weeks notice if they were firing you. I agree with KrysTros about remindig them about the no weekends policy and that you have plans this weekend. Good Luck!! Hang in there.
ReplyDeleteI think giving 2 weeks is the right thing to do BUT if it's really unbearable then I you should just leave.
ReplyDeleteAs good as it would feel to walk out with no notice, I have to agree with everyone else. You do not want a bad choice to haunt you after this...
ReplyDeleteBut I would be vocal about it though and see what they say. It may just be that all parties involved come to the conclusion that it would be best if you did not take 2 weeks?
It's hard when you aren't happy. And the fact that they only gave you two days notice for working during a time that you aren't supposed to be scheduled. I'd get the two weeks done, but that's just me. It is about what you want to do, what makes you happy. I keep debating between Dec 1st and Dec 24th as being my last days at work. Some times it's because of the paychecks, some times it's because I don't want to screw over the other people there...
ReplyDeleteIt's best to give 2 weeks notice with a letter of resignation. That way you're taking the high road and keeping it totally professional! Good luck and let me know when you're "free" so we can make a lunch date!
ReplyDeleteAlways give two weeks notice. You never know when a future employer will call them to ask about you and everything goes down hill all because you never gave your 2 weeks. I know you hate your job, but you are the professional there so don't stoop to their level.
ReplyDeleteGood luck!
As a USO quitter due to boss reasons myself, I say stick it out for the two weeks. As military wives, chances are we will come in contact with the USO again. For instance, I would love to do something with the United Through Reading program once we get back to the states. I potentially burned a bridge, and while I don't know for sure if it will hurt me, I wish I didn't have to worry about it.
ReplyDeleteI think you should still give the two weeks. You'll still be there, but there is a bright light at the end of the tunnel so it will be much easier.
