Yeah...You Don't Really Know My Educational Background

First of all I'd just like to say this is a small vent so please be prepared.

In general I really enjoy being a military spouse. I like the benefits, I like the experiences for travel and meeting new people.

I do not like it when people assume that you have little to no education because you are a military spouse.

As some background to this vent, we hired two new people at the USO. One is the director who I really get along with and the other was the operations manager or basically an assistant manager. Both are women and the latter was someone who talks all the time and really won't stop and you kind of just have to fake laugh or agree and hope she leaves. You've met people like that right? Anyway...after a disasturous first week the assistant manager gets fired on Tuesday. The manager had asked me to be a witness so that later the girl being fired couldn't alledge anything wrong had been done during the firing. It was extremely uncomfortable to say the least.

Anyway...yesterday an email comes in from the girl who was fired and she goes on and on about how she was more qualified for the director's job than the woman who got it and she was angry about how I, a subordinate, was witness to her firing. Then she got on her high horse about how she was taking Masters classes and blah blah blah.

Ok...first of all, you don't know my or anyone else who works there's educational background and for you to assume you were above cleaning the USO because of the fact you've taken Masters classes lets me know truly how stupid you really are. Lastly do NOT assume that because I'm working a part-time job that it means I have no education. I have a Bachelors thankyouverymuch and when I'm good and ready will work on my Masters. I highly doubt after speaking with you that you are more intelligent than me. So stick that in your pipe and smoke it.

Geeze people....me working a part-time job is part of being a military spouse. We make sacrafices and I would think someone who is a military spouse herself would get that.

Rant over!

  1. People are idiots. (Or as we say in my family "People freakin' suck!")

I was really surprised at how dumb some people were in my first master's class. Some of the smartest people I know never graduated from college.

So have you guys put in a post transfer to Germany yet? No? Get on it! ;)

  2. I am an "older student" still working on my BS . . . two more classes! . . . I get so aggrivated by people who A) think because they are older than me that makes the more intelligent B) the "little kids" who go to school with me and are working on their MS . . . hello! Just because I chose to live my life backwards by getting married young and starting a family before I finished school doesn't make you smarter than me! You might have more time to study and get better grades, but let's face it I have the "street smarts" you won't have until you're waaay past my age! C)these days, what does having a degree prove? The majority of people I know that are unemployed right now have Bachelors & Masters degrees . . . why, because the truth is the job doesn't require a degree so they can Joe Blow less money for the same job. kd is so right, "people freakin' suck".

  4. Ew. I guess this just goes to show the more someone assumes about you, the more it makes an ass out of them! :)

  5. Oh I feel your pain. I went to a job interview once and the guy interviewing me thought I was a single parent and didn't think I had a degree (EVEN THOUGH I HANDED HIM MY RESUME WHEN I SAT DOWN!)

Honestly, I think this recession should show everyone that a college degree means crap at this moment in time. It is all about your work ethic, job experience, and how you treat other people. I am sorry you had to be witness to a firing though, that truly sucks.

  6. Exactly. Just because people work part time does not mean that you haven't got an education.

  7. Sounds like your life will be easier without having to deal with her at work. Sorry you had to go through the uncomfortable "witness situation" and put up with her for as long as you did.

  8. Stupid, bitter people. Like having a grad degree means all that much! In college, we shared classes with the grad students. They had the exact same classes and professors we did, they just had to write an extra paper or two. Yeah, takes a GENIUS, let me tell you.

  9. That is frustrating! Having a degree or not doesn't necessarily mean someone is more qualified or not anyway. Even if you or the other woman didn't have a degree , it wouldn't mean you aren't right for the job or that she was because she did. I think experience, drive, work ethic, and even personality are much more indicative of how someone will perform versus whether they have a piece of paper or not (unless maybe you are a doctor!) I know plenty of people with degrees that shouldn't have the jobs they do, and people without that should be higher up! Basically, I think it can sometimes be a poor way to judge anyone.

I hate that once some people know where I went college they assume I went there and "daddy paid for it." It is a wealthier private school, but I worked hard to go there. My parents couldn't afford to pay for any college, and I went there because I worked hard in high school, was accepted and applied for grants and scholarships. People should just quit making assumptions in general!

Vent whenever you need to :)

  10. This reminds me of a situation that royally pissed me off. When I was in college I worked part time at Blockbuster video by my house. It was a fun job. One night a guy got pissed off cause he had some late fees and he said that he dropped them off on time and we were trying to rip him off. As he walked away (after finally paying) he goes "This is why you're a loser and will work at Blockbuster for the rest of your life." I SCREAMED "I'M A COLLEGE STUDENT YOU JERK!"
My boss didn't even yell at me ;)

  11. I LOVE YOU! Can I say that without you getting weirded out? Seriously?! Okay here's the thing...I have NEVER, EVER, heard anyone say "Put that in your pipe and smoke it" except for my DAD! You ROCK!

But as for the rest of your post...you still rock. Cause the fact that I've been a stay at home mom for 5 years gets me that "I soooo am looking down my nose at you" look. I have a bachelors! I am educated! Hello! People are STUPID!

  12. I just hopped on by from another blog. Couldn't resist commenting on this. I'm a SAHM and military wife.

I don't actually have any qualifications (long story!), but really I am far from stupid. I really don't like being automatically treated as though I am stupid by other people because I stay home and don't have a degree.

I actually have an IQ of 139 (I know, such a show off) and I'm doing the job I love, which is being a mum!

  13. I had a similar thing happen at a FRG meeting where the education leader person (I have a whole rant about it from this summer) assumed that we were unambitious because we "wasted" our degrees by being army wives essentially. Oh well be glas she is gone!!!
