I'm sure many of you have seen in the news this week where Snooki from MTV's Jersey Shore was paid $32,000 to speak at Rutgers University.
Now, I'm the first to admit that sometimes I watch Jersey Shore. It's pretty much a trainwreck and sometimes I enjoy that trainwreck. However, I think the people on that show are ridiculous and have a lot of growing up to do. I'm just floored that a university would ask a reality tv "star" to speak to their students. I'm confused on what she could actually speak on. Tanning? Pickles? Her affinity for cheesy, steroid-using Italian-American men?
Sometimes when I hear stories like this, I really worry about the future of America. It seems like we keep getting dumber and putting stock in people that have no reason for being a celebrity other than they get drunk and make-out with people on camera.
My theory? Fewer and fewer students are attending their graduations, opting instead to simply receive diplomas in the mail - thus cheating the universities out of all that graduation revenue, like robes, announcements and other paraphernalia. I think, by having people like Snooki (who, frankly, I would prefer to someone like Bill Ayers) they're trying to up graduation attendance and profits. But that's just a theory.
ReplyDeleteActually the students paid to have Snooki speak and the School paid for the Nobel Prize Winner.
ReplyDeleteSo that just shows it's our generation haha.
But yeah the Student Organization voted to have Snooki speak and used their student money from said organization to pay for her. I think it makes it a bit more tragic this way.
I found this pretty interesting to read
ReplyDeletehttp://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/celebritology/post/snooki-speaks-at-rutgers-university-and-makes-more-money-than-toni-morrison/2011/04/01/AFIlaGGC_blog.html
Apparently there is much outrage over this from not only parents who have kids in school there, but also from students attending classes.
This is the most absurd thing I think I've ever heard.
ReplyDeleteThis makes me sad for our future.
:(
Woooow. That is ridiculous. I agree with JG - that they might be trying to up graduation attendance by having a "star" speak. However, Snooki? Really? They could have done so much better than that.
ReplyDeletewow, can you say desperation? so ridiculous!!
ReplyDeleteUm...wow!
ReplyDeletewell... I'm pretty sure all my friends studying at rutgers just got a tad bit more stupid. >.<
ReplyDeleteSnooki was at WrestleMania and won the match for her team...I couldn't believe that either!
ReplyDeleteBut yeah, wonder what she will speak on?
Amen girl!
ReplyDeleteI agree! It's sad and pathetic that they paid her ANYTHING to come speak. Did she even go to college herself? No... didn't think so. What's sad is that they won't even pay real celebrities or actual people with doctorate degrees to speak.
ReplyDeleteI have no idea why that university would pay her to speak. It's not like she has done anything but bs ridiculous on television.
ReplyDeleteI definitely have to agree. If my university spent money (which I most likely paid into, what with the hundreds of dollars in fees I'm charged) to have someone like Snooky speak, I'd be extremely disappointed.
ReplyDeleteIf only I would've known that all I had to do was exploit myself on tv, wear a massive poof, and become tanorexic then I could be a millionaire by now! Jersey Shore is definitely one of my guilty pleasures, but it's sad/disappointing to see a place of higher education choosing Snooki to be their guest speaker.
