My Beef With Jodi Picoult

Lately I've been reading Jodi Picoult books. I find them to be easy reads and they keep my attention for the most part.

I do have a beef with them though. It seems as if the stories all very similiar. Child with some sort of disease or condition, parents and family go through crisis, lawyer assists family and child.

Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy them and Jodi Picoult, but I want it to be mixed up a bit. Don't follow the same formula for every book. That's one of the main reasons why I got tired of reading Danielle Steel books because every book seemed to be almost the same, just with different people.

Your thoughts?

  1. Jodi Picoult is my fave. I love her. Have you read The Pact yet? Unless I totally lost my memory...none of the parties have a big medical condition!

  2. I actually can't get through a JP book to save my life. A friend of mine gave me a whole stack of them during our last deployment and I just didn't enjoy them. I started with My sister's Keeper and didn't even finish it.

  3. I, like Sara, can't get through them either! My sister gave me a bunch and I have attempted to read them many, many times. I have yet to finish one.

  4. I have read a few of her books and loved them, but began to feel the same way. So I have to read a few different authors in between ~ same thing with Nicholas Sparks!

  5. I like to read about one JP book per year. Did you know she was a hotshot lawyer before she started writing books? That's a large part of the reason why her books always have that curve to them.

  6. I have friends who read 19 Minutes and they can pick out characters in the book that are almost identical to the kids they went to school with. She's from the area that I grew up and her son went to the high school that Hubs went to. I was actually in the high school working on the day that the "shooting" was going to take place, I say this because that part of the book is written "in the future". It was interesting to get through....

But yes I have some times stopped reading authors books because they all have the same plot.

  7. I've never read anything of hers, but I have heard that complaint about her writing before.

Reminds me of the VC Andrews books I was hung up on as a teen... (young girl... usually ends up living in a mansion & falling in love with a family member)

  8. That sounds kind of like James Patterson books to me. I actually don't mind a Jodi Picoult book every now and then, but that may be because I have a terrible memory...

  9. I really like her but I noticed that trend as well. I had to stop reading her for awhile. It became too easy to figure out what was going to happen. I agree with Emily Ann...Nicholas Sparks is pretty predictable, too!

  10. I love her and have read many of her books. However, I feel like in the last few years she's just been dishing out stories to make the bestseller list.

  11. Yeah, I'm not a JP fan. I've read a couple of her books--first to see what all the fuss is about and then for book clubs, but yeah, I always know exactly how they're going to end and they're incredibly formulaic. She obviously does her research, which is great, but yeah, I'd rather spend my reading time elsewhere.

  12. I've thought for a while now that most authors only have one good story in them. If they continue writing, it seems like their success usually depends on how well they are able to vary their original idea or story.

  13. Jodi Picoult was my saving grace through my first year of nursing school. I used to take the train from my house to the college, and since I decided I was giving myself "extra" time by not driving, I would let myself read junky books while I rode (unless I had a test that morning and needed some last minute cramming!). I read through my library's entire collection of Jodi Picoult!
I feel ya, she gets a little repatative. Have you read The Song of the Humpbacked Whale? Or Second Glance? I liked those two a lot and neither of them are about diseased children!

  14. I agree, her books do tend to be the same plot, different people. But when I do read them, I enjoy! I scatter them around other books.

Nicholas Sparks is the SAME WAY.

  16. Yes! I have noticed the same thing. I've recently read a couple of her books. I think they will be a better read spaced out between other books. I also really don't like the endings to her books, I kind of feel like I'd rather have stopped reading 5 pages before the end.

  17. I feel the same way about VC Andrews and Nicolas Sparks. Entertaining reads, but after reading a few books by them, they get old.
