Todays question stems from my love of the show Big Love.
What are your thoughts on polygamy?
I'll chime in with mine first. I don't agree with polygamy in the sense that men take wives that are under the age of 18. That creeps me out. However, looking at it religiously, how can people say they don't agree with it, when there are a lot of cases in the Bible of men who took several wives? That's always puzzled me.
So..let's hear your thoughts! (And please keep it civil)
I don't like that show, it totally portrayed my faith (LDS) in a bad light which I don't appreciate. Well, actually I've never watched it I've just heard about it. Lol.
ReplyDeleteI'll be the first to admit, that this is one of my favorite shows on TV. However, having said that, i don't like that it portrays the ENTIRE faith in a bad light.
ReplyDeleteI do not agree with taking wives that are way too young, have no choice in the matter, or are related to you (ew?), however, who are we to judge someone else for how they live their life, if everyone involved is happy?
I myself could never do it, because I'm a possessive b*tch like that (he's mine, damnit, go away!), but if it makes someone else happy, go for it, as long as it doesn't interfere in my life.
I LOVE Big Love!
ReplyDeleteI guess if everyone is a consenting adult then it is their own business what they do. I would never personally participate in the practice (I'm jealous!) but as long as everyone is over the age of 18 and aren't being forced into the "marriage" then it isn't my place to judge.
I could never do it. I'm way too possessive for that to every work out for me!
ReplyDeleteIn terms of polygamy in the Bible: The recording of historical acts, including instances of polygamy, is not necessarily an endorsement of it by God. The Bible records both good and bad actions of people, even people considered to be righteous. The fact that David and Solomon had several wives and that it's in the Bible doesn't automatically imply that God was pleased by it, any more than the records of David's adultery and the arguments in the early church implies God's approval of either.
I believe you can love more than one person wholly and fully, not so sure I can love more than one person that way at once, but that's not to say that it can't happen. and I agree with "Scatterbrain". for sure. polygamy isn't for me.
ReplyDeleteAnother agreement for "scatterbrain's" response. not for me ( her response made me crack up, btw)
ReplyDeleteIt makes for good TV though. Still, I guess if you feel that polygamy brings you closer to your God, than far be it from me to judge.
Without getting my religious and personal views mixed into the equation, the one thing I never understood about it being illegal was this. How can it be illegal when adultery is not? Sure it's immoral and not ethical to most, but it never quite added up to me.
ReplyDeleteP.S. I love that show too!
Polygamy isnt for me -- Im too jealous and possesive to openly share my husband with any other woman!
ReplyDeleteAnd I dont agree with underage wives, or taking family members as wives, either. But I guess for other people, as long as they weren't trying to push it on anyone else, who am I to short-change them when it comes to their happiness?!
I personally am not a fan of it, I couldn't share the man I love. But as long as all parties are over 18 and are OK with the situation and entered it in their own free will, its not any of my business to tell them No.
ReplyDeleteNever seen the show, but I think that if everyone involved can handle it than it's a decision to be made. I just think when it happens it rarely happens well.
ReplyDeleteEww
ReplyDeleteI came from a polygamous home. Trust me, you will not survive.
ReplyDeleteI don't agree with it at all. I agree with the commenter who said that she is too jealous to be able to share her hubby.
ReplyDeleteOn that note, the situation they portrayed on Oprah today where the man had multiple child wives. Sick. Wrong. Don't get me started.
I gotta go with "Scatterbrain"
ReplyDeleteI would never "share" my husband.
I don't think A. I could ever survive the insecurities of my man with another woman. B. I could ever love more than one man the way i love my husband right now. C. That in no way is healthy for kids to grow up with!
I completely disagree with polygamy, and admit I would never be able to share my man!! thats why hes MY MAN!! lol, I donno how those women do it.
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen the show but I know I could not handle it. I'm good at sharing but I definitely couldn't share the man I love. He needs to be mine and only mine.
ReplyDeleteI like the show. I am not sure really if I could "share" my husband. But I definitely wouldn't want to be 2nd or 3rd wife- that would not be ok with me. I don't think it should be illegal, as long as everyone is consenting adults. The show glamorizes polygomy, it can't be as easy as it looks.
ReplyDeleteNever seen the show, but I am 100% against polygamy. Personally I think it is wrong and completely sexist. And I think it should remain illegal- for both personal and legal reasons. I cannot see our country ever being accepting of a WOMAN having multiple HUSBANDS so why should a man be allowed to have multiple wives? These women are oblivious to the world outside which they are raised and I bet that if they had any real education at all outside the perverted version of their religion that they were taught that they would not choose this for themselves. I think polygamy is disrespectful of peoples lives, their faith, and moral values. It is unacceptable that this is allowed to happen AT all within our country and harsher punishments should be the result of practicing this sick and twisted so-called version of "faith".
ReplyDeleteI'm actually friends with a polygamist um, couple? (There's 3 of them). They aren't relgious, in fact they aren't trying to "add more wives" or even have kids; they know the consequences that could bring to their family. The three of them just happen to all be in love.
ReplyDeleteHaving said that, they are amazingly kind, sweet and normal people. I appreciate reading other people say "If they're consenting adults who are we to judge" because after having spent time with them, there couldn't be a more blissfully happy family. If you met them walking down the street you'd never know.
Usually they are met one of two ways: With disgust or interest. I met them with interest, but sadly I've seen others meet them with disgust.
Different strokes for different folks. It's not my place to judge.
I do find it odd that men took several wives back then... however, no I don't like it. Plan and simple haha.
ReplyDeleteI love that BL! As far as polygomy...the idea of sharing my husband and his attention, no thanks, not for me. It seems rather selfish to me for men to have multiple wives, while women have one husband.
ReplyDeleteWhatever floats your boat is my motto but I'm personally not a fan of it and think of it as a form of cheating.
