The other day my Mom and I were discussing my 10 year class reunion. Although it's not for another 2 years (Class of 2001 baby!) I've already decided that I am NOT going.
My mom seemed suprised by that when I told her. "Are you sure you don't want to go?"
Mainly, I don't want to waste a trip to the states going for a high school reunion, but also I honestly don't want to see a large majority of the people who would most likely attend.
Don't get me wrong, I was well-liked in high school. I wasn't what one would call "popular" but I was involved in a lot of activities and I had a great group of friends. Most of them I still talk to and my best friend from high school and I still talk to as much as being overseas allows me to.
However, knowing my town and the people I went to high school, I know who would most likely be at our reunion. It's the same people who never left our town and gather together every weekend at each other's houses, the lake or random bars to all hang out together and get drunk.
Count me out. I could go another fifty years and if I never that group of people again I wouldn't complain a bit!
So, are you gals planning on attending your reunions? Why or why not?
My 10 year is in November and I am not going...just like you said, I have my friends from HS that I still talk to and the rest all hang out with each other...even if I am home that weekend I can think of 100 other things to do! Now if I wasn't pregnant and could get my self fall down drunk...maybe ;)
ReplyDeleteMy 10 year is in three years - whoa! But I think I may go. I'm still, surprisingly, very close friends with at least 10 people from my class, so it may just be a great excuse for us to all get together again!
ReplyDeleteI haven't gone to one and don't plan on changing that. Anyone I'm interested in keeping in touch with I have. My BFF and I have our own reunions. :-) We meet in Vegas!
ReplyDeletea big shot out to a fellow 01' grad!!!!!!!! as for me, im not sure if i will go to mine. the same is true with my little town...the ones who havent left all hang out and blah blah blah. id like to go just to show off my hubby and the kids, but that to me isnt reason enough to go. MAYBE, just maybe I will though!
ReplyDeleteI think I'm with you. I have no desire at all to see alot of the people from my class. We just have different goals and priorities and not much in common at all anymore
ReplyDeleteI just might. Mine is in 3....I think I would go just to show them how great my life is..best revenge is living well right? lol
ReplyDeleteI have no desire to go, either. I still keep in touch with people from high school that I want to, but as for the rest of them--no thanks. I don't really want to hear how many times everyone's been divorced or how many kids with different fathers everyone has. That is exactly the type of conversations that would go on, too.
ReplyDeleteMine will be in '13, and I do plan on going, mainly because my class was so small we had just over 30 people who graduated, so anyone's absence would be very conspicuous! Plus, hopefully by then I'll have crossed off some major Bucket List things and I'll have something to show off. If not, if I haven't gotten at least one book published by then, or had at least one kid, then no, probably not.
ReplyDeleteI did go to my 10 year reunion, and I'm kinda glad I went, but it wasn't all that. I still talk to a handfull of friends from high school, and they are people that I really like. The rest of them, eh I could take em or leave em. I talk to more people from high school now that more people are on facebook, so I know what they're all up to anyway!
ReplyDeleteMine is '12. I can't wait! Haha, no seriously. Zach and I went to high school together, and both his best friend and my best friend went to our high school. I still talk to numerous people, and am friends with nearly every single of the 320 people I graduated with still on facebook. We were all just really close, I guess. We had at least 30 people from our high school at our wedding and we were married 5 years after graduation!
ReplyDeleteAnd I swear, we aren't from a small hick town, though I know it sounds like it, haha! Just a really close knit Catholic community where most of us went from K-12 together!
ick. you just described the folks that would attend my reunion and why I passed (mine was last summer). no thanks.
ReplyDeleteI'm the same class as you! And no, I don't plan on going to my reunion. I'm like you, I keep in contact with the people I want to, I have no interest in seeing the others.
ReplyDeleteMy 5 year was this year, and I don't think anything was really don't to celebrate it...
ReplyDeleteMy best friend from high school and I already agreed that neither of us wanted nor needed to go for essentially the same reasons you listed.
I keep in touch with/see everyone I want to see anyways!
I was just like you and did not plan on going to mine which is this summer but I have since changed my mind. Don't let anyone pressure you to go when the time comes :)
ReplyDeleteI always thought a class reunion would be fun but I never went to public school so I have to sit out on this question:p
ReplyDeleteI'm going to mine...mostly because I'm helping to plan it. Everything that is planned is "no alcohol allowed" and we don't have many people coming that actually still live around there. That's ok...they are the same people that complained about everything in high school. :)
ReplyDeleteI agree with Kebi, but I skipped my ten year one fore other reasons, too. It was the same thing... all the same peeps who never moved away. I'm glad I didn't go.
ReplyDeleteBesides, I think if you're happy with where you are in your life, there really is no reason to go to those things, since to most people, they're just a way to compare "levels of success."
I agree. My 10 year is in 3 years and I've already decided I'm not going to it. The people that would go are not the people that I would have hung out with.
ReplyDeleteThanks to myspace, facebook, blogger and twitter I pretty much know everything about the people I went to high school and cared to keep in touch with.
ReplyDeleteGranted we are spread all across the states now so it would be good to hang out with them, but I know everything that is going on in their lives and vise versa!
I may or may not go.. mine is still a ways off.
ReplyDeleteDo you mind my asking where you went to highschool? I can't remember if you'd already mentioned it before.
I'm not planning on going to mine. Most people are on myspace or facebook and so I feel like anyone I would want to see I can find on the internet.
ReplyDeleteI went to my 10 year reunion and I had a good time. My best friends went too, so it was a nice chance to hang out with them. It was good catching up with people I had lost touch with and seeing everyone all grown up. Mine was in the town where my parents live so it was a good excuse to go visit. I'm glad I went but I totally understand your reasons for not going to yours.
ReplyDeleteI was class of '02, and I think I'll probably go to mine. I think part of it is I haven't lived in the state I graduated in since high school, so except for a few close friends I haven't seen since then. And even some close friends I don't get to see very often.
ReplyDeleteEh. Mine is next year. I've already had a mini-reunion with many of the people who matter to me earlier this year.
ReplyDeleteI don't know. I went to high school in Orange County, CA, and I really hate going back. So I doubt I'll go. I've gone there twice this year (haven't been back in 2 years) and I really don't want to go again any time soon.
One of the elderly speaking here....class of '88. I didn't regret skipping my 10th reunion. I'd just had a baby a few months before and the timing was all wrong. Plus, it didn't seem like 10 years was enough time away from most of those people. And sure enough, reports from other people that attended indicated that a lot of people had not changed or grown up one bit.
ReplyDeleteI do kind of wish I'd gone to my 20th last year. Enough time has gone by that I've forgotten why I couldn't stand some of them and now it's really nice to reconnect and share memories. We're on leave this month and I'm visiting the area where I went to HS. I've invited anyone who wants to come to meet for dinner tomorrow night and we'll have our own mini-reunion! I prefer getting together with people on a smaller, more personal scale than a reunion. Maybe you can do the same one day.
That would be a negative ghostrider. I didn't go to my 10 year, I won't go to my 20. Gunner didn't go to his either, and his 20 is fast approaching and he's expressed no interest. We have the same thing, the same people vacationing together, etc. There is life outside of highschool!
ReplyDeleteNo way! I missed my 10 year, my 11 year (WTH??) and my 15 year (this year). I found out that at my 10 year, the class "stud" was fat and bald over drank himself and barfed all over everyone. The way I look at it, I keep up with the people that I befriended in high school. Everyone else, I don't care about.
ReplyDeleteI graduated in 2001 too!
ReplyDeleteI probably won't be able to make it, for the same reason as I will still be overseas and to just make a trip for the reunion isn't in the cards.
Negative. I feel the same way about my class and the people who show up. It wouldnt be worth the trip and I would be completely ok with missing it :)
ReplyDeleteMy 10 year reunion was in August of last year. I did attend and leading up to it, I was actually excited to go - however, it turned out to be a huge disappointment. I was part of a fairly large graduating class, of which only a fraction of people showed up. Outside of the friends I went to dinner with beforehand, none of the people I would have liked to see and reconnect with at the reunion were in attendance. Factor in what could only be interpreted as poor planning by the reunion committee and a not so great venue, and what you get is one LAME reunion. Least to say, I ended up leaving early.
ReplyDeleteMy 10 year is in October and because the money that our class raised for it has some how magically disappeared so ours will be held at a bar. Lame. My twin and my girlfriends all decided we should go just to say we did and then afterwards we're going to go out for dinner and drinks. I agree though...for you I don't think it's worth a trip back to the states.
ReplyDeleteI cannot wait for my 10 year reunion! I still talk to quite a few people I went to HS with. We are from a small town, too and definitely have the people who just stayed there but there are also several of my girlfriends who are now teachers there. I had the best graduating class and cannot wait to see most of them!
ReplyDeleteI didn't attend my 10 year reunion (Class of 1998 - yea, I'm old!) First off, we had already planned a vacation for that weekend. But even if the reunion had been on a different weekend, I wouldn't have gone either. I came from a small school in a BIG city. I wasn't in the "popular" crowd, but wasn't unpopular either. I had an amazing group of friends, but I just had no desire to go and see the "popular" people... does that make sense!?!?!?
ReplyDeleteI went to mine last year and had the best time. You should really consider going, even if it's only for an hour :)
ReplyDeleteMine is next month! I never talk to anyone anymore, but I still it might be kinda fun. I'm also thinking of those that stayed behind while the rest went off to college. It's true! They hang out on the weekends and get wasted. Same group of people doing the same things they were doing in high school. It depresses me.
