This, That and Toby Keith

I pulled a muscle in my shoulder, right between my neck and my shoulder. To say it hurts is an understatement.

You may be thinking...did Melissa do this at the gym, doing her heavy-duty weight routine? I would have to reply, "No, I did it reaching for a piece of paper underneath my windshield wiper." Then I'd watch you laugh, because it's so completely ridiculous that I pulled a muscle doing that.

The sky was green for awhile earlier and in fact, it still may be. Green as in stormy green, complete with lightning and thunder. Yeah...it's rained and stormed so much in the last few days that they have shut down bridges because of flooding. Here I thought spring wouldn't be as exciting in Italy. Boy was I wrong!

Tonight at the USO we are having baked potatoes complete with a ton of fixins', that's right I said fixins', guess it's my Oklahoma twang coming out. I cannot wait! Usually I run home right at 5:00, but today, I'm going to have to stay for this potato feast!

So, I don't think I've mentioned this yet, but Toby Keith is doing a free concert here on post tomorrow. I have mixed feelings about it. A lot of the soldiers are upset because his "camp" has sent out a statement telling people not to take pictures or videos of him, not to approach him before or after the concert and not to ask for autographs. I find that pretty crappy honestly. If you're doing a tour for the troops, then why all the restrictions? I can see the request for no video, but not to even approach him? Ridiculous!

  1. Ouch, I hope it gets better soon. A pulled muscle is no fun at all.

Okay, I heard he was coming to Vicenza. But seriously, no pics or approaching him. That's seem a little ridiculous, I mean especially since it's for the troops!

Enjoy that potato feast, I know I would!!!

  2. Toby's policy does seem kinda lame! It's a good way to turn people off, for sure.

Hope your shoulder feels better soon! Reaching for a paper under your windshield wiper is a way better story than pulling it while working out :)

    Eat a potato for me!!

  3. What is Toby Keith's deal? I've always admired the efforts he makes to do concerts for soldiers, especially overseas. But hearing that really makes me wonder about his motives...

  4. Hey, I tore my deltoid (yes, tore) playing the Wii--I can totally relate!

I am super hungry and the potato fest sounds awesome!

And srsly, Toby Keith, why you gots to be so douchey, yo?

  5. Don't worry - I have pulled musclees doing stupid things like reaching for my glasses in a weird way because I was too lazy to sit up. I hope it feels better soon - that can really hurt!

Also, the baked potato feast sounds delish - I love my starches! That is kind of a bummer about Toby Keith. Maybe he will lighten up when he gets there.

  6. I have always thought Toby's patriotism is for publicity. This policy now just proves that his patriotism is a publicity stunt. I have little respect for him.

  7. That's yucky about Toby Keith. Hopefully it's just a precaution and he will lighten up.

It's been raining like crazy here too. No thunderstorms like at "home," but constant rain. Ugh.

  8. Muscles are rarely pulled doing something worth it, it's so very sad! You should just tell us you pulled it while skiing, we'd believe you :)

And about Toby Keith? That's well rotten, and lowers my level of respect for the man. Hmph.

  9. Toby blows! Why even do the friggin concert if you won't allow the personnel to chat you up??

  10. Not cool about Toby Keith. Not cool at all. I'd be kinda interested to see how the show goes anyway and see how he actually reacts/responds to the men and women out there.

  11. Pulled muscles suck.. hope it gets better soon. This would typically be the time that I would decide to tell everyone "Gosh, I'd be at the gym right now but..."

  12. I'm with you... why do a free concert for the troops if you don't even want anyone to speak to you? That's ridiculous. I've heard that he's a jerk... he's probably just doing the free concert for the publicity.
Hope your shoulder gets better! :)

  13. I hope your sore muscles recover quickly! That stinks about Toby Keith! He's all about the publicity. He needs to lighten up. I want a baked potato after reading your post!

  14. That really lowers my respect for Toby Keith. Hopefully he will lighten up some when he gets there, but I don't have high hopes now! Let us know if you hear anything after the concert!

Pulled muscles are never fun. And I do think the story is much better than if you had pulled it at the gym... it's unexpected! :)

  15. Wow that's odd with Toby. My ex saw him 3 times and every time he told me Toby stayed until the last solider got the autograph they wanted. Weird….I don’t like that one bit.

I feel your pain. I reached to grab a tissue I dropped in school and pulled a chest muscle. For the next 6 weeks I felt like I was having a heat attack.

    Feel better soon!

  16. Aww! That's a little low of Toby. I'm a little disappointed!

You should send out a mass email telling everyone NOT to cheer and applaud him everytime he finishes a song.

  17. I hope you feel better soon! That is something I would do...I'm such a clutz!

That is awful of Toby Keith. I've always totally loved him, and I'm disappointed to hear that he does that kind of thing.

  18. I think the whole Toby Keith thing is kind of lousy. It's not like he's doing this show for a bunch of random people off the street! I could see him having security concerns if that were the case, but REALLY?? It's supposed to be a show for the TROOPS...you know...the people who protect his right to live in a free country in the first place! Seriously Lame.

I hope your shoulder feels better! I broke my foot in two places just stepping off a curb last year, so I know how that feels!

  19. The Toby Keith snobbery does sound pretty lame.
Monday was pretty stormy here too. The sky turned that same green that always reminds of when it's tornado season in Oklahoma. Did it remind you of home?

  20. I hope your shoulder feels better!

Um...really!?!?! WTF, Toby Keith needs to remove that stick...

  21. Mmm, baked potatoes sound good. And what's up with Toby? That is definitely rude. He's supposed to be "all about the troops". Apparently it's a front.

  22. Remember, in Oklahoma fixin' is a verb (I'm fixin' dinner.) Sorry about the shoulder and Toby Keith, but I hope you do enjoy your potatos.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Wow. I can't believe that about Toby Keith, he promotes himself as this BIG TIME guy supporting the troops.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Some people can be so snobby! I hate that too. He claims to be such a troop supporter, he can do more than a free concert.

So sorry about your shoulder. Ouch!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Sorry about your shoulder, just wondering if Toby did a show or not. He has done one at ALL THE OTHER bases he went to and took pictures and all so I can't see him not doing it here. Please let us know what happened. I have NEVER heard him doing this.

  26. I am not sure what the deal with Toby is about. he came to see us while I was in Afghanistan, and I have a couple of videos and several pictures. I have a picture of him hugging me and me cheesing from ear to ear. Hope that is all wrong and your shoulder gets to feeling better sooN!

  27. It sounds like Toby Keith has become one of those stars who has really let his ego get to him. Kind of sad if you ask me.

  28. Ouch to the pulled muscle. And yeah, Toby Keith's policy is lame, but I also have a lot of respect for him because when he goes to Iraq he asks them to take him to the most dangerous base to perform. Those are the guys that don't usually get to see anyone (he came to Rob's base right before he got there) so I think that's pretty cool. It is weird that he's so exclusive though.

  29. I wouldn't have thought Toby Keith would be such a diva but I guess I was wrong!

  30. Maybe a lot of you don't realize Toby has just finished six days in Afghanistan, doing 15 shows, criss-crossing the country, and, yes, meeting with military people. He is human, it is entirely possible that he's a bit tired, but don't cut him any slack on that account. He will put on one heck of a show. And just because "his camp" issues a statement that doesn't mean Toby will adhere to it. In the US, his tickets say no video or cameras either, but if you are a member of his fan club, you'll see that not only does Toby allow cameras, he plays to them. I know people who don't like Toby will never change; but guess what those of us who do, never will either. I still say he will give you one heck of a show.

  31. Boo on Toby Keith for being such a diva!

Please, please eat a bit extra of those fixins' for me! MMM. loove baked potatoes!

oh and I totally have pulled muscles in my SLEEP hahah. (or maybe I just sleep on myself wrong, but whatever. I might as well have pulled it)

    ReplyDelete
  32. I think I pulled that exact same muscle awhile back, reaching under my bed to pull out a cat. It hurts!

I can't believe that an artist like that (who is so vocal in his support for the troops) would act so diva-like. Ugh. I'm curious how the troops will react to him during his visit.

Enjoy the potato bar! I cheated and did the fast food thing tonight. I worked 10 hours today and I'm exhausted. I'd rather eat and go to bed early. :)

  35. Oklahoma has the BEST food-- especially in the summer. Fish and corn and steak and grilled burgers and fried potatoes and fried ocra... Dang I'm so hungry.
