I should be the new Emily Post!

Random post ahead...be warned.

So two nights ago Sean and I get home from the gym. He volunteers to make dinner. He asked if hot dogs were OK. Feeling low-maintenance I said sure.

I bite into my hot dog and immediately want to puke. He then tells me he made these new "veggie protein hot dogs" that we bought on our last shopping trip.

Ew. Ew. Ew!

I tried to choke the rest of it down and ended up giving the rest of it to Boomer.

It tasted like corn mixed with a lot of cardboard. Even ketchup and mustard couldn't make it better.

As God as my witness I will never eat a veggie hot dog again! (said in my best Scarlett O'Hara voice)

Yesterday I was talking to one of the girls that I baby-sit for. Her husband and mine are good friends and the two of them will be joining us for Thanksgiving.

Anyway.....we were talking about the various families we had invited and how one couple and their children had acted sort of weird about it and then the husband had wistfully told my husband that his wife was insisting on having their "own" Thanksgiving. OK...that's cool. It doesn't hurt my feelings. If you want to have your own Thanksgiving that's more than fine.

THEN I find out yesterday that the reason why they (read: she) isn't coming is because we are having a keg at our house that day.

OK...the keg was not my idea, let me just clarify that. However, the single boys that are coming over wanted to bring one. That's fine. I don't care because I won't be drinking it.

THEN (very dramatic aren't I?) she tries to get the wife who I was speaking to about this and her husband to come over to their Thanksgiving dinner.

Now that ticked me off! First of all, like I said I don't care if you aren't coming to my house, but DO NOT try to re-invite my guests to your dinner! How rude is that?! I feel like calling her up and unloading on her, but because I'm a proper Southern lady I'll just ignore the social ineptitude of this fellow Army wife.

Some people!

Quick kitchen question for all you pasta cooks out there. Everytime I cook pasta it ends up sort of gummy. Am I not cooking it long enough? Or am I cooking it too long? Help is needed please!

In other news, Sean should start clearing in the next week. When he told me that it the happiest I've seen him. (Well minus our wedding day) I know he is so ready to be out of this unit and onto another one. I informed him that when he has some down time from clearing he's welcome to take Boomer to the groomer to get his nails clipped.

Oh...one more thing. Buy this book.

It comes in that version for yourself or All About Us, which is for couples. It's really fun and quite thought provoking. I have both books, but will probably by another copy of All About Me, just because it's fun to see how your answers change.

Have a great Wednesday!

By gummy do you mean sticky? If it's overly sticky, that means it's cooked too long. If, however, by gummy you mean kind of chewy, it's probably not cooked long enough (they call this "al dente" when it's intentional). If it's both chewy and sticking together, it means you may not be stirring it often enough while it's cooking; adding a little bit of olive oil to the water will keep it from sticking together. :)

As Emily said, it sounds like you're cooking it too long and possibly in a pot not big enough for the pasta. Try adding olive oil to it and stir it more.

I put up the fish heads post lol. Mark was about in tears when he read it.

The above is good advice, also be sure the water is already at a hard boil before putting the pasta in.
God, that would have horrified me as well, to feel in the middle of an unseen Thanksgiving tug of war over guests. How unsettling. What if you did call? Maybe your honesty could be a gift to her.

I can't believe that woman! That's so rude.

I think the other girls gave you good advice on the pasta! I agree!

I have the All About Us book! Or well I filled it all our last year for E and gave it to him as an anniversary present. I had started one and lost it at the airport! I had even started to fill it in- funny thing is as I was getting my bags I saw a lady carrying the book and I was like wow how funny she's got it too! ( I didn't know mine was missing yet!) Later that night when I noticed it was gone I was so upset that that lady had my book and reading personal things- good thing I didn't get too far! So I bought another one and filled it out for him!

Thanks for the comment on my blog. I too am married into the military so I know how hard things are sometimes. My husband is in the Army.

We have been stationed at Fort Hood, Fort Riley, and now we are at Fort McPherson.

I saw you were in Houston a little while ago, that is where I am from. I miss it so much!

Anyway, I look forward to reading more of your blogs.

Have a great day!

Ew to the veggie dog! All veggie "meats" make me want to vomit.

With the the pasta, you might not be cooking it in enough water. When you dump the pasta in the water the pasta cools the water down and if the pot isn't big enough and there isn't enough water, the water cools down to much screwing up the cooking process which can make the pasta gummy.

I love the randomness! Veggie dogs are disgusting- ewww!!! That girl was really rude to try to steal your guests. If you have a keg at a holiday dinner, you will probably be the most popular house in your city! Good luck with your Thanksgiving dinner plans!

Oh no she didn't! (Said with lots of snapping and head moving.)

Awesome! I live in the Garden District/ Uptown area.. it is so beautiful!
Great streets for architecture are Prytania, St. Charles, Esplanade, really anywhere in the French Quarter closer to Esplanade.. that is probably my favorite part!
Haunted tours are awesome.. but I also recommend you take a day-time horse carriage ride for $12.00-- the tour guides will give a complete history lesson along the way. I made my family who flew in town take the tour and they loved it! Obviously check out cafe du monde for your sugar fix! St. Louis Cathedral is also a big hit-- it is just plain gorgeous!

Where are you thinking of eating?

With Love from New Orleans said...

You need to go to Fulton Street for the Holidays-- it is just a really festive street during Chrsitmas-- it is right across from Harrah's

My favorites...both Uptown and Downtown...

Expensive:
* Nola, an Emeril restaurant
* Bayona
* Commander's Palace (my fav)
* Upperline
* Stella
* August
* Mr. B's Bistro (a fav)

Medium:
* Gumbo Shop
* Mulate's
* Mother's
* Ralph and Kacoo's
* Tujague's
* Jacques-imos (a fav)

Not bad at all:
* Joey K's
* Mat and Naddie's
* Port of Call (a fav go EARLY)
* Crescent City Brewhouse

Hope this helps!!

XO,
Nola

Ah, post drama! That was terribly rude of her. This is one of the reasons I don't really want to live on post again!

A tip for the pasta:

In addition to the other suggestions (enough water, plenty of olive oil, and cooking it al dente) try this. When you drain it leave it in the strainer and run cold water over it, rinsing the starch off. Then leave hot water running over it to keep it hot and non-sticky until you serve it up.

How rude!!! I can't believe the gall of some people. More like I can't believe people were raised like to act like that!

You're cooking it too long! Here's a good test (weird, but it works!), if you're not sure if the pasta is done throw it on the wall (or backsplash, tile, etc). If it sticks, it's done! And the About Us book is great- I have it too!

Christopher and I totally have the all about us book. It was soo much fun to fill out together. We even have a second copy so that on our 25th wedding anniversary we can fill it out again!

That hotdog sounds disgusting! Sorry you had to eat it!

I would be PO'ed too if someone pulled that with me. I'm pretty lucky in that most of *R*'s friends are single so I don't have to worry about it.

Or does that make me unlucky because then I have to deal with having 15 bachelors at the house all the time?

Anywho...I'd be pissed. Oh, AND I'd be pissed that someone tried to feed me veggie hot dogs. That's just nasty.
